Just when everything is finally going right for Jones, a 30-year-old writer living in New York City, one day he mysteriously wakes up unable to read.
After discovering his illiteracy Jones consults a number of doctors and friends, but nobody knows what’s wrong with him. With each day that passes Jones grows more paranoid and confused. Left with no one else to turn to, Jones sets out into New York City to find answers on an adventure that pulls him deeper and deeper into a strange surreal world populated by other “illiterates” with similar afflictions that while disorienting is at once increasingly familiar.
At the end of The Illiterate all we are left with is a parable about a man who inexplicably loses everything — for Jones, the absurd comedy that ensues after he wakes up one morning unable to read.

I loved this story. I couldn't wait to see where it went! It reminded me of a "Twilight Zone" episode.Product details

The Illiterate A Novel edition by Jim Freed Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Fabulous story. I recommend it highly.
I'm always on the lookout for new voices in literature and glad I found this one. A friend had recommended the ebook to me and I'm glad she did. It's different from a lot of the fiction I've been reading of late and I found the offbeat style refreshing. It's hard to marry an innovative narrative style with a clear, compelling plot, but this guy does it. Definitely recommend it.
The Illiterate is the perfect companion for a rainy weekend, and one that lingers long after the clouds have cleared. Freed seamlessly weaves reality, perception, delusion, and dream in this thoroughly captivating book. In the tradition of Being There, Freed leads Jones, his protagonist, through a not-quite right New York that layers questions on answers in a two-week drunken daze. Anyone who sometimes questions their own choices, wonders what other lives might have been, or loves a good story will devour this book. Bravo, Jim!
Terrific. A modern literary voice with a Kafkaesque twist.
I loved this story. I couldn't wait to see where it went! It reminded me of a "Twilight Zone" episode.
